New Year's Weekend in Athens

The weather in Athens was warmer than the weather in other European countries and this was another good reason to choose Athens as our destination for New Year's Eve.

It seems as if Athens is constantly evolving. There is a difference between the areas of the city, of course, each with its uniqueness, but the city center looks modern and chic.

Unlike the previous time, we stayed overnight in the Gazi neighborhood (known as a Gay neighborhood). This time we chose to stay in the city center.

We have very successfully chosen one of the most central hotels in Athens, and also the most pampering. This is a Villa Brown Ermou hotel. This is a small boutique hotel, which belongs to the Brown (Israeli) hotel chain. The hotel is located really, but really, in the center. On a narrow street, surrounded by restaurants and parallel to the famous shopping street. We were also able to reach all the nearby neighborhoods on foot and the room was cozy and luxurious including a paw machine and a comfortable bed. You can skip breakfast at the hotel, it's mostly carbs or you take extra charges so you should just go out and eat out – see recommendations below.

Connection from the airport to the city center

One of the advantages of the hotel in the center of the main thing is also the convenient transportation from the airport to the hotel. Although we arrived at night time (around 21:30), we took a train directly from the airport to Syntagma Square which is close to the hotel (less than 5 minute walk). Backand because it was early morning, we booked a taxi.

What tours should you do in Athens?

Since we had already been to Athens once and had already visited the Acropolis and some other sites, we booked an electric bike tour which was very light and nice (just what we wanted). We booked through the Viator app a tour called Athens Scenic Bike Tour on Electric or Conventional Bike).

Cafes and restaurants

We are not heavy eaters so we look more for a cozy atmosphere. We found ourselves coming back again and again to Rooster Cafe for both breakfast and dinner. The location is central, the food is good and the service and atmosphere are also really pleasant.

Next to the hotel, there is also a nice wine bar. It was fun to sit at midday in the sun with a glass of quality wine.

We didn't have time this time to spend time in the Gazi neighborhood but we recommend visiting there as well. In terms of New Year's Eve celebrations, we did not go to a special party although it was possible to find and pre-book tickets for parties, some also on hotel rooftops, etc. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a unique party for gays and fireworks today only at 24:00 and we were already very tired so we drank a cocktail in the hotel bar and went to bed.
